Biography
Dr. Ulan Kasymov is a DAAD Guest Professor at American University of Central Asia (AUCA) and teaches at Humboldt-Univesität zu Berlin. Ulan’s research interests include environmental governance, institutional economics, land and water management, and rural development. He has extensive research experience in Central Asia and Mongolia. Most recently, he was involved in the MORE STEP research project in Mongolia, funded by the German Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR). The aim of the transdisciplinary study was to analyze the socioecological dynamics in the Mongolian steppe ecosystem in order to identify irreversible processes and thus prevent them at an early stage. Ulan analyzed the existing policies on grassland sustainable use and conservation. Furthermore, Ulan was one of the lead authors of the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) Regional Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services for Europe and Central Asia (2018) -Chapter 6: “Options for governance and decision-making across scales and sectors”. Together with co-authors, he published several peer-reviewed articles based on the IPBES assessment.
